4th Joint Steering Council Meeting
The 4th Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city Joint Steering Council (JSC) meeting was held in Singapore on 27 July 2011. Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and Chinese Vice-Premier Wang Qishan co-chaired the meeting. ![]() Deputy Prime Minister Teo said the project was very meaningful in the light of global concerns over climate change and challenges brought about by rapid population growth and increased urbanisation. Vice-Premier Wang described the project as a “milestone” in Singapore-China cooperation and said the project, developed on salt-alkaline land, was meaningful but challenging. In his view, one key challenge China faced was how to achieve sustainable development while undergoing urbanisation and industrialisation. He said the Tianjin Eco-city could take the lead in innovation, develop scientifically in a sustainable manner and help China address the challenges brought about by industrialisation and urbanisation. ![]() The meeting also reviewed the development progress of Tianjin Eco-city and discussed some key areas of focus going forward. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to its success and to its development as a sustainable development model that is replicable, scalable and practicable for other Chinese cities to emulate. |
