MINISTER FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO VISIT THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA AND ATTEND THE SINO-SINGAPORE TIANJIN ECO-CITY JOINT WORKING COMMITTEE MEETING

Mr. Mah Bow Tan, Minister for National Development, will be leading a delegation on a working visit to the People's Republic of China (PRC) from 29 to 31 January 2008.

He will be attending the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city Joint Working Committee (JWC) meeting, which he co-chairs with Mr. Wang Guangtao, PRC's Minister of Construction, on 31 January. He will visit the Suzhou Industrial Park on 29-30 January for an update on the project. He will also join the IE Singapore-led business mission to Tangshan on 1 February.

The meeting with Minister Wang will be the first JWC meeting to be held after the signing of the Framework Agreement and the Supplementary Agreement on the development of the Eco-city on 18 November 2007 between China and Singapore.

During the meeting, the JWC is expected to discuss the Key Performance Indicators and technical standards for the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city as well as the work schedule and key milestones of the project.

Minister Mah will be accompanied by Minister of State for National Development Grace Fu, and officials from Ministry of National Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Trade & industry, Urban Redevelopment Authority, Building & Construction Authority, IE Singapore, Public Utilities Board and the National Environment Agency.

The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city project is the most significant collaborative project between Singapore and the PRC since the development of the Suzhou Industrial Park. Senior Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong first mooted the project in April 2007. Under the agreements signed in November 2007, the two countries will collaborate to share their expertise and experiences in the formulation of policies and programmes to develop a socially harmonious, environmentally friendly and resource-conserving city in Tianjin.

The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city will be developed by a joint venture company to be formed by a Singapore Consortium, which is led by Keppel Corporation, and a PRC Consortium, which is led by Tianjin TEDA Investment Holdings Co. Ltd.
